What is citrulline malate?

Citrulline malate is a combination of L-Citrulline and malic acid.

Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid, meaning our bodies can actually produce it in small quantities on their own. It is widely available as a dietary supplement because of its many benefits throughout the body.

It works heavily within the urea cycle which is the process that rids our bodies of harmful compounds like ammonia, through our urine.

Citrulline also promotes the widening of blood vessels, leading to increased blood flow which we all know is a huge component of sports recovery and endurance.

Fun Fact: Citrulline was initially discovered in watermelon! It can also be found in foods like cucumber, pumpkin and bitter melon.

Malic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that is made naturally by all living organisms.  When combined with creatine supplements it can help boost sports performance as it helps the body absorb creatine.

Malic acid has a few other uses including:

  • Treatment of tiredness and fibromyalgia
  • Used to provide food with a tart taste where desired
  • Used to adjust the acidity of cosmetics

How does citrulline malate work in the body?

The amino acid, L-Citrulline is converted into L-arginine, which is, in turn, converted into nitric oxide. Because of this, blood flow is increased in the body, lending many benefits to sporting and exercise efforts.

So, why not just take arginine supplements if that’s what it eventually turns into? Well, citrulline malate helps increase L-arginine levels to a better standard than taking straight arginine supplements because arginine in its pure form is harder for the body to absorb. Taking in large doses of arginine can also lead to gastrointestinal issues. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

The malic acid component of citrulline malate helps enhance creatine phosphate regeneration which means you recover from sets quicker, your endurance is increased and you can fight muscle fatigue harder.
